Story 1 — Working with Intention

Client Situation: “I hate my job and it’s ruining my life. What can I do about it?”

Mark, a 40-year-old corporate trainer for an information technology company, came to coaching feeling miserable about his job. “This is the only thing I’ve done professionally, so I’m not sure what else I CAN do.”  A friend recommended coaching because she had had such a positive experience.  Mark was desperate and figured he had nothing to lose by hiring a coach.     

The Process
As the coaching relationship got started, Lisa encouraged Mark to give himself full permission to dream…what would his ideal work look like?  What type of environment would he work in?  What kind of people would he be working with?  These were just a few of the questions that Mark addressed in defining his ideal situation.  In addition, Lisa helped him to clarify his values; the essence of who he was.  Mark identified his top three values: making a difference; connection; and play.  He immediately recognized that his work as a corporate trainer was not in alignment with these values. What he enjoyed about training was being in the front of the room, teaching and facilitating in a way that the participants understood what he was talking about.  And then came the AH-HA moment…he wanted to be a teacher!  As a teacher he could certainly make a big difference in the lives of his students; he would feel connected to them and he could express the playfulness that he so valued.  

The Outcome
Lisa and Mark worked together for approximately nine months.  During that time Mark decided to pursue his teaching certification, enrolled at a university and cut back his hours at work to allow time for his schoolwork.  Mark recently contacted Lisa to inform her that he had accepted a teaching position at a high school near his home.  He was thrilled to have successfully transitioned into a new career within two years!
