Client Situation: “We work all the time and never have time for each other. We want to start a family and wonder how we’ll manage it all.”
Lori and David were both approaching 40 and had been married for about a year. They were both very driven and career-focused, working long hours each week and sometimes on the weekends. They wanted to start a family and were trying to decide upon the right time. They both recognized that their work schedules made it difficult to spend time together as a couple. How would they possible manage a baby? They decided to work with a coach to make some important life decisions.
The Process
At the beginning of the coaching relationship, Lisa guided Lori and David individually in creating a vision for their ideal relationship. During the coaching calls, the couple then discussed their respective visions with each other and created a shared relationship vision that represented a composite of what they wanted from the relationship. They both wanted to explore the areas of work/life balance and family. With Lisa’s skillful coaching, Lori and David carefully examined their commitment to each other, their careers and their desire to start a family. Lori became aware of some fears she had related to parenting. As the female partner, she believed that she would have greater responsibility for parenting. She did not want to be a stay-at-home mom, and the alternatives of day care and in-home child care did not appeal to her. David, on the other had, was at a place in his career where he was questioning his purpose for doing the work he was doing. The idea of having a child and being at home for a period of time was very appealing to him. Neither Lori nor David was aware of how the other felt about parenting, and they realized that they were both operating under false assumptions. Coaching enabled them to articulate what they wanted and then develop a clear plan to achieve their vision.
The Outcome
Lori and David worked with Lisa for six months. During that time, David created a career plan that included both resigning from his current position and designing a part-time position that would enable him to work from home. Together, Lori and David developed a plan to spend more time together as a couple. They cut back their work hours, especially on the weekends and evenings, and they found that they were more productive. In addition they started having more fun together.
Client Testimonial
Relationship coaching with Lisa helped us to clarify what we both wanted, and to communicate with each other in a safe and trusting environment. Lisa was particularly helpful in assisting us to learn coaching skills that we could use outside of the coaching sessions. As a result, we are able to communicate much more effectively with each other and feel ready to start a family!
